Launching of The Portsmouth Community Watch Foundation

After much anticipation, built through endless publicity and campaigning, The Portsmouth Community Watch Foundation (PCWF) was officially launched to the general public. This momentous occasion took place on Thursday 19 March, 2009 at the Central Credit Union Convention Center, in the heart of Portsmouth.

This event, led by the chairman of the PCWF Mr. Adenauer Douglas, was graced by a cornucopia of distinguished guests and speakers, including the parliamentary representative of Portsmouth, Honourable Ian Douglas. There was also a remarkable display of support from the armed forces, in the presence of its most distinguished officers. This included Commissioner of Police Mr. Hobbes JnoBaptiste and Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Ainsworth Irish, who both gave addresses, highlighting the need for such a foundation. Sergeant Matthew Cuffy, the acting inspector for the Portsmouth district also gave an address.

Along with displays of alliance with the police, members of the PCWF gave addresses, explaining the functions and ambitions of the foundation and its sub-committees. The PCWF comprises of six sub-committees: Standing Committee, Neighbourhood Watch Committee, Conflict resolution and Counseling Committee, Youth Development Committee, Technology Committee and Public Relations Committee.

Mr. Nicholls Andrew, whose passion lies in neighbourhood watch, gave an educational address on this topic. Representing the Technical Committee, Mr. Drinnon Nyerere, the web developer who created the foundation’s site, www.portsmouthwatch.com, gave a step by step presentation on its many services; while Mr. Wayne Abraham explained how the use of technology can aid in crime prevention. Psychologist Frederica James sensitized the public to the roles Conflict resolution and counseling has on curbing the crime rate. Mrs. Jennifer Jeffers, renowned for her benevolence, gave and address on quality of life issues and how it relates to crime. Lastly, foundation member Josette Harney, read addresses on behalf of PCWF honorary members, criminologist Dr. Peter St. Jean of Trafalgar and Dr. Leroy Mitchell from Portsmouth , both residing in the United States.

After an informative night, the public was left enthused and motivated to take a stand and many individuals expressed interest in joining the foundation.

Thanks go out to the sponsors, who contributed to the success of this event in their respective ways, and of course, to the phenomenal, hardworking members of The Portsmouth Community Watch Foundation for a job well done.

To all who are ready to make Portsmouth and Dominica at large a safer, more peaceful place, we welcome your support.

To all the criminals and partakers of illicit activities, beware, be warned, Portsmouth is NOW ON WATCH.

This movement is a good initiative how ever i don't think that the component of
video cameras makes any sense.
1. Cameras can’t just be deployed around the
town recording people’s movements.
2. You all don’t have the resources
required to support this implementation.

Have any of you tried going to the
streets and speak to the people who commit the ills?
You may get better result
by doing that than any other strategy you may try.
